Box vs Cylinder: Why the Shape of Your Air Purifier Decides If It Works

Walk into any shop and the air purifiers that catch your eye are slim, white cylinders. They look like a design object. The problem: looks don't move air. And moving air - a lot of it, through a big filter - is the entire job.

The cylinder

Looks great. Clears a corner.

  • Usually one small fan
  • A thin filter cartridge hidden inside
  • Airflow for a desk, not a room
  • £40-60 proprietary refills, forever
  • Often sold as “vacuum-clean the HEPA” - don't (see below)
The Luggable

Looks plain. Clears the room.

  • 7 fans - roughly 7× the airflow
  • A full sheet of hospital-grade MERV-13
  • Clears a whole room in minutes
  • ~£2/year filters
  • Sold on airflow - the number that matters

The one number: airflow (CADR), not HEPA, not looks

Real performance comes down to CADR - Clean Air Delivery Rate: how much genuinely clean air a unit pushes out per minute. A gorgeous cylinder with one small fan can't move enough air to turn over a living room. A box with seven fans and a big filter can. “HEPA” on the label tells you the filter grade - it says nothing about how much air actually gets cleaned.

Two things nobody tells you about cylinders

1. “Vacuum-clean your HEPA” is a hazard, not a feature. To dodge the cost of proper refills, many cylinders tell you to vacuum or wash the HEPA and reuse it. Don't. A HEPA filter's job is to trap fine dust, allergens and mould spores - vacuuming it blasts that captured load straight back into the air you breathe, and the suction tears the delicate fibres so it never filters properly again. A filter you can safely swap for ~£2 beats a filter you're told to re-contaminate your room with.

2. The shape itself is wrong for cleaning air. A tall, slim cylinder forces all your room's air through a small, narrow filter - high resistance, low airflow, a corner cleaned at best. A big flat filter face lets far more air pass with far less effort. Same physics as a wide door versus a keyhole. Shape isn't styling here - it's the difference between cleaning a desk and cleaning a room.

So why do cylinders sell?

Because they photograph well, and most people have never been told which number to check. Once you look at airflow instead of aesthetics, the choice gets simple.

Don't buy an air purifier on looks. Buy the one that actually clears the room.
